      Having used 'Blockos' and whatever other bigger Lego alternatives, we decided our 4 year old was trustworthy enough for her first 'proper' Lego set.
      Although there is a theme to the different packages e.g. a Lion and meat set, or a traditional Oriental building, you can pretty much create anything your imagination can come up with using all the blocks here, but following the instructions (at least once) is a good idea, to familiarize your child with building to a plan at least. There are many blocks of varying sizes and as anyone's foot can attest, Lego is as solid as ever.
      Loses 1 star as, although inflation is no doubt driving the prices up, I still think £50 odd for a Lego set is rather expensive.

      Watch a child playing with Lego for a few minutes and you can easily see why this brand has lasted since 1932. Founded in Denmark, the bricks are truly iconic in a world where this is a very overused word. I had my first Lego in around 1966. I love the fact that Lego is equally appealing to boys and girls - and has been for 50-odd years at least.

      Children love Lego because it sparks their imagination. Drawing on paper is good - but it is a one-dimensional thing, whereas Lego encourages children to visualise in three dimensions just like the real world. The things you can construct with this set - let's face it you'll be doing some of the building along with your children or grandchildren - look great. A whale, a London red double decker bus, a pair of penguins, a snappy little crocodile and a palm tree - all of which can be used with other Lego sets. Maybe the crocodile lives in a palace, with built-in pools? Does the London bus come past your house, even though you live in the countryside?

      This 'Classic Around the World' set is wonderful. You'll quickly find that not only children's imagination is stimulated - yours will be too. With 950 bricks in the pack, there's a lot of imagining to do. And of course Lego has longevity. These pieces will keep children amused for several years and they may even want to pass them on to their children. A great set, well worth the investment - and a toy that won't be a passing fad.

      I got this as a birthday gift for my daughter and it's a great set, and dare I say it... there is a slight educational angle to it.

      Geography for a 5 year old may not be high up on their priority list but this set from Lego is pretty cool. Included is a map of the world and each little Lego build represents something from a particular continent/country, which helps spark up the conversation on the subject.

      The other great thing about this set is that on first glance you might think that all you do is build the icons and then display it on the map, (which you can of course do), but the set also includes loads of additional bricks for you and your child (which adult doesn't like Lego!) to build further and have more imaginative play.

      This is what we've found with this set. There is the functional "follow the instructions" side of Lego coupled with the brilliant "make what you want" play side of things, that Lego manages so well. She loves it and we've made all manner of odd things to assist in travelling the globe!

      This is a classic toy that has stood the test of time and you really can't go wrong with Lego which is fun for kids and adults alike.

      This set is an excellent introduction to Lego for younger children as the models are very easy to make and the various animals and trees etc are fun and vibrant to play with.

      When the kids get older you can use this set to make your own models and explore your own imagination.

      You can make penguins, trees, giraffes, cactus, whales, cars, houses and much more besides. Each of these models use a small number of pieces so they are great for kids just learning to decipher the instructions, although it's fun for parents to play and help too!

      Like I said, Lego is a classic toy and has remained so for a very good reason and this is another excellent set. It's definitely aimed at the younger kids and is the perfect stepping stone from Duplo to the traditional Lego pieces.

      Well worth considering.
